We were still based in Savannah for this part of our journey, and it turned out to be one of those stretches where having local knowledge made all the difference. Spending time with our friends, Keith and Joy, who know the area meant we got to see and experience places we never would’ve found on our own — from coastal islands to historic towns just over the South Carolina line. It was a great reminder of how grateful we are for the friendships we’ve made along the road and how much richer travel becomes when it’s shared.
Tybee Island
Our time in Savannah wouldn’t have felt complete without a trip out to Tybee Island. It’s only a short drive from the city, but it feels like a completely different pace. We met up with our friends and kicked things off at The Crab Shack — one of those classic coastal spots that’s just as much about the experience as it is the food.
From there, we wandered through Sugar Shack for a bit of ice cream before heading over to the Tybee Island Lighthouse. Standing at Georgia’s easternmost point, it’s easy to appreciate how much history is packed into such a small island. Between the views, the laid-back coastal vibe, and good company, Tybee Island was the perfect break from city exploring.

St. Helena Island, and Beaufort, SC
Crossing into South Carolina, we spent the day exploring St. Helena Island and Beaufort with friends — and naturally, food was part of the plan. Lunch at The Foolish Frog gave us a proper Lowcountry introduction, complete with Frogmore Stew and waterfront vibes.
Beaufort itself is packed with history. As one of the oldest cities in South Carolina, the downtown waterfront and historic district feel like stepping back in time. We visited the Beaufort National Cemetery, which dates back to the Civil War, and later stopped at the Old Sheldon Church Ruins. Burned and rebuilt multiple times throughout American history, the ruins are both peaceful and powerful, and easily one of the most memorable stops of the trip.
Tire Wear Issues / On-Site Replacement
Back at the RV, something we’d been keeping an eye on finally needed attention. One of our tires was showing uneven wear on the edges, and after watching it progress over several travel days, we decided not to push our luck.
Thanks to a local mobile tire service (Davis Tire), recommended by our local friends, we were able to have the tire replaced right at the campsite. Watching the tire get mounted and balanced on-site was incredibly convenient — and far better than dealing with a potential blowout on the highway. Once the new tire was installed, we double-checked lug torque ourselves and made a mental note to schedule an alignment once we were back home.
On travel day, we continued monitoring tire and hub temperatures at rest stops. Comparing temperatures across all the wheels is something we do regularly, especially after tire work, and everything checked out just as it should.
Tuckaseegee RV Park
Rather than pushing through an extra-long travel day, we adjusted our plans and stopped at Tuckaseegee RV Park — a spot we’ve enjoyed before and were happy to revisit. The private sites, peaceful setting, and riverfront views make it an ideal place to unwind after a full day on the road.
Pulling in felt like a reset. After busy days of sightseeing, mechanical problem-solving, and highway miles, settling into a quiet, familiar campground was the perfect way to wrap up this leg of our journey.
