After the horrible experience of getting stuck on the road up to our cabin, we weren't quite ready to take the RV back down! But that didn't stop us from exploring new places for our wedding anniversary. 💍 😊

Cashiers, NC

Cashiers, NC, is one of those cozy little mountain towns that feels like a well-kept secret. Tucked away in the Southern Appalachians, it's a place where life moves at a very leisurely pace. Whether you're strolling through the charming downtown, checking out the unique shops, or just sipping a coffee while enjoying the stunning views, Cashiers has a way of making you feel right at home. It's not just the scenic beauty that catches your heart but also the warm, welcoming vibe from the locals that truly makes it a special little nook in North Carolina.

We stayed at Hotel Cashiers, which is like the cherry on top of this quaint town experience. It's more than just a place to stay; it's a part of the town's charm. Nestled among the trees and the rolling hills, this cozy hotel offers a perfect blend of comfort and rustic elegance.

It's also just a short walk down the hill from the hotel to several shops and restaurants and a short drive to some amazing restaurants like the Hidden Valley Tavern, where we had a special 9th Anniversary dinner. ❤️

Whiteside Mountain Trail

The first thing we did in Cashiers (even before checking into Hotel Cashiers) was hike the Whiteside Mountain trail.

Whiteside Mountain Trail in North Carolina offers a breathtaking hiking experience, marked by its signature sheer cliffs and stunning panoramic views. Located in the Nantahala National Forest, this moderate, 2-mile loop trail takes hikers up to the summit of Whiteside Mountain, standing at an impressive 4,930 feet. The trail is well-maintained and features a series of wooden steps and platforms, providing a safe pathway for visitors to ascend and enjoy the remarkable vistas. The mountain's sheer cliffs, among the highest in the eastern United States, create a dramatic backdrop. Whether you're seeking a serene walk in the woods or an exhilarating glimpse of the Appalachian wilds, Whiteside Mountain Trail promises a memorable outing.

The first half of the trail is a bit of a climb to get to the summit and doesn't have much in the way of views. But the hike back along the cliffside is what it's all about, with amazing vistas all along the length of the mountain!

On this (cliffside) part of the hike, we had our first-ever bear encounter while hiking! We were with a large group of hikers staying together for safety because there were several reports of a mama bear and her cubs on the trail. However, for some reason, we were at the head of the group when we came around a corner to a bear in the middle of the trail staring right back at us about 30 yards away! Luckily, the bear went on about its way and left everyone alone. About a half mile later, we ran into another bear (or maybe the same one) and managed to get a little bit of footage through the brush.

Whenever we hike, we are always prepared with bear spray, a whistle, and a satellite communicator!

We had a great time in Cashiers and look forward to re-exploring the area on the motorcycle in the future.
