RVing (and Hang Gliding) the Outer Banks, NC!

Wright Brothers National Memorial

This week, we're still on the Outer Banks in North Carolina and made a stop at the renowned Wright Brothers National Memorial. This historic site commemorates the pioneering achievements of Wilbur and Orville Wright, who conducted their groundbreaking flight experiments here. For this outing, Chad went solo since I wasn't feeling well.

As a former pilot who used to fly to the area, Chad had a unique perspective on the experience. The monument marks the exact location of the world's first controlled, sustained, powered flight and is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the Wright Brothers.

Jockey's Ridge State Park

Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head was established in 1975 and is home to the tallest sand dune on the Atlantic Coast at over 60 feet tall! The name “Jockey's Ridge” comes from the early inhabitants' tradition of capturing and racing wild ponies in the area. The park offers plenty of activities like sandboarding and swimming in wetland habitats. We enjoyed exploring the dunes, even though walking on the sand was a challenge, and Daisy made the trip even more fun.

While there, we visited one of the many Kitty Hawk Kites locations to plan our hang-gliding adventure.

Kitty Hawk Kites!

Hang gliding was absolutely exhilarating! When Chad and I arrived at Kitty Hawk Kites, I was a mix of excitement and nerves. But Andy, our tandem guide instructor, immediately put me at ease with his calming demeanor. After going over the process and signing some paperwork, we were ready to take to the skies!

As we soared up, the view was breathtaking, and I felt like I was living in a dream world. Andy even let me take control of the kite for a while, showing me how to maneuver it. All the while, our pilot, Johnny, was flying down to pick up Chad (and our camera with the big lens), to give him a ride back up to capture some video.

Then we met up with Chad and Johnny (in the plane), and he captured some amazing footage of our adventure. From spiral dives to daredevil stunts, it was an unforgettable experience. I can't wait to do it again! Kitty Hawk Kites offers so much more than just hang gliding, and I highly recommend checking out their other thrilling activities.
